Jakarta, August 2: An earthquake of moderate-to-high intensity was reported on Friday in Indonesia. The tremors emerged from off the island of Java, and struck southwest of Sumatra. The magnitude of the quake was measured as 6.8 on the richter scale, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The worst effect of the tremors have been felt in Banten province, where several buildings swayed for couple of minutes. Local media reports claim that the impact of earthquake was also felt in the capital Jakarta.
No major damage to properties or casualties have been reported so far. The Indonesian authorities, however, have feared after-quakes in the next 48-72 hours.
In view of the warning, Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency has issued a tsunami alert. Residents based in coastal region along Banten have been asked to "evacuate immediately and move to higher grounds".
