Earthquake in China: Magnitude-5 Quake Shakes Yunnan Province, 18 Injured, 6000 Homes Damaged
The moderate earthquake damaged over 6,000 homes and affected more than 48,000 residents.
Beijing, Aug 14: An earthquake of measuring 5 on the Richter scale hit China's Yunnan Province late on Monday. The moderate earthquake damaged over 6,000 homes and affected more than 48,000 residents in Tonghai and Huaning counties and in the district of Jiangchuan, leaving at least 18 people injured. All injured persons are said to be in a stable condition.
According to China Earthquake Networks Centre, the epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of seven kilometres. "Stuff in my office started shaking. I heard a bang, and then the drinking fountain fell," Chang Li, a nurse with the county's orthopedic hospital in Tonghai, was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Follwoing the earthquake, hundreds of residents in the township of Sijie in Tonghai spent the night at a 16,000-square-meter shelter. Zhewan village in Sijie was worst affected where 80 per cent of homes were damaged, according to Gao Guangjin, a Party official with the village. Gao said that around 600 of the 830 residents in the village spent the night in 130 tents.
The provincial civil affairs department has allocated 200 tents, 600 beds and 1,000 quilts to quake-affected regions.
