Juneau, July 22: A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck the Alaskan peninsula on Wednesday, triggering tsunami alert in the region. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric informed that soon after the string quake hit the region, a tsunami warning was issued. The quake was at a depth of 10 km, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences said.

Reports inform that the earthquake struck off the coast of Chignik. It was felt as far away as Anchorage, which is 500 miles away. So far, there are no reports of any casualty or damage to property. Reports inform that sirens could be heard along coastal cities in the state.

 According to the USGS, the quake hit at about 11:12 p.m. PST. It had a depth of six miles and was centered 60 miles south-southeast of Perryville, Alaska.

Earlier this month, a minor earthquake was felt throughout Alaska’s Cook Inlet region. Reports inform that it was an aftershock of a powerful earthquake struck the Anchorage area 19 months ago.
