Abu Dhabi, February 7: A freak accident took place on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Street (Dubai-Abu Dhabi road) involving 44 vehicles. While there was no loss of lives in horrific multi cars accident it did leave twenty-two people injured. Abu Dhabi police took to their official Twitter handle to inform about the E311 road crash which occurred due to low visibility because of heavy fog. The video of the crash site showed the grim situation after cars rammed into each other.
Abu Dhabi has been experiencing foggy conditions resulting in a backlog at several busy intersections and unusually heavy traffic across the United Arab Emirates capital. However, on Tuesday Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street near Abu Dhabi Police Officer’s Club witnessed a bad accident risking human lives. The accident resulted in a heavy jam as it blocked traffic from Dubai on the E311 road.
According to a statement issued by Abu Dhabi police, drivers were at fault behind the pile-up crash. The motorists did not maintain a safe distance between vehicles, speeding and utter disregard to safe driving practice resulted in this domino-like crash involving dozens of cars. In the same release, the officials also confirmed twenty-two individuals to be injured. Out of them, two of the victims sustained serious injuries in the crash while others have sustained minor injuries.
"The police had already put in place emergency plans for foggy conditions, including banning lorries and buses transporting workers from using roads during such conditions. Such vehicles were instead to wait until the roads became clear to ensure the safety of road users and avoid possible fatal accidents," said Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaili, director of the traffic and patrols directorate in a report published by Khaleej Times.
Emirates police including Abu Dhabi and Dubai are on their toes in providing as much as assistance as possible to make driving hassle-free and keep accidents at bay. From the quick response in aiding accident victims to sending alert messages about weather conditions via social media, the department is doing it all. In Brigadier’s words, it's "absurd" that multi-car accidents were still occurring despite the police taking so many precautionary measures.
