Washington, Mar 13: US President Donald Trump today sacked his top diplomat Rex Tillerson and replaced him with CIA chief Mike Pompeo.

"Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job!" Trump tweeted.

"Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! (sic)" he added.

Trump also announced the appointment of Gina Haspel to head the Central Intelligence Agency -- the first woman selected for the agency's top post.

"Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" he tweeted.

The rejig comes amid the turbulent human resource management at the White House, with four Trump aides deserting him in the past fortnight.

The biggest blow came with the resignation of Hope Hicks, one of Trump's most loyal aide.

Hicks resigned from the post of White House Communications Director, citing personal reasons.

Reporters, however, were rife that Hicks was shown the door after he appeared before lawmakers' panel probing Russian involvement in the 2016 US presidential elections.
