Washington, July 6: The United States Military is discharging immigrants from the service. The US military is asking immigrant reservists and recruits who were enlisted with the promise of a citizenship to quit. According to report published in New York Magazine, some also alleged the military that they are being discharged with little warning or explanation. However,the Army and Pentagon refused to comment due to pending litigation.
The report stated that Lucas Calixto, a Brazilian reservist filed a lawsuit against the Army. He alleged that the army offered him a reason of personal security for discharging him from the service and was not even given a chance to defend himself.
According to the report, there are around 10,000 immigrants are serving in the military, while the immigrants facing discharge all enrolled in recent years as part of the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, or MAVNI. The recruiting program started under the George W. Bush administration offered expedited naturalization to immigrants with much-needed skills.
After President Obama made Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA )recipients eligible, the military added additional security clearances for recruits. Due to this conservatives criticised MAVNI. The Trump administration even made recruitment of immigrants into the military service tougher. The Pentagon has also abruptly cancelled the contracts of hundreds of immigrants The program was later suspended. There is a fear amongst immigrants that they might also lose their immigration status.
The main motto of the Trump administration is 'American People First'. After coming to power President Donald Trump has launched a crackdown on illegal immigrants. The changes are also made in the immigration policy. The illegal immigrants are now immediately arrested. Making few changes to this policy, children below five years are allowed to stay with their parents, The move to boot out immigrants from the military service can also be considered as part of the US government's crackdown on immigrants.
