Mumbai, July 30: A pet owner in New Zealand was arrested after her dog died due to overfeeding. The dog, Nuggi, weighed 53 kg and suffered a liver haemorrhage that became the cause of this death. The Auckland police found Nuggi in 2021 when he weighed around 54 kg. The officials then placed him under the care of the SPCA.

According to a report by NewsweekNuggi lost almost 8 kg under SPCA care in two months. But Nuggi was diagnosed with a liver haemorrhage, and he died. The SPCA added that Nuggi's obesity was so extreme that veterinarians were unable to hear his heartbeat with a stethoscope due to the thick layer of fat. His claws were reportedly overgrown, and he had numerous skin growths, especially on contact areas like his stomach and elbows. Following this, the owner pleaded guilty to neglecting the dog's physical, health, and behavioural needs. The Manukau District Court in Auckland sentenced her to two months in jail and fined her 1,222 New Zealand dollars (INR 60,328.18). Additionally, she is barred from owning any dogs for a year.

According to a statement by an official, being a responsible dog owner involves providing an appropriate diet and daily exercise, which was not the case here. Nuggi was drastically overfed, and instead of seeking help or amending the behaviour, his owner continued to overfeed him until he could barely walk. This was deemed unacceptable.
