Beijing, July 20: A Chinese woman, surnamed Gao, was horrified to discover a video of herself being secretly filmed during her breast augmentation surgery, widely shared on social media five months post-operation. The video, showing Gao heavily bandaged and under anaesthesia, surfaced on Douyin, a popular Chinese platform.

Gao underwent the procedure at a cosmetic surgery hospital in central China in January, reported SCMP. She expressed that her privacy was severely violated and has since demanded the hospital identify the person responsible for the recording, delete the video, issue a public apology, and provide compensation. However, the hospital refused to apologise, attributing the recording and distribution to an "external" party. They claimed that all surveillance footage is destroyed after three months, making it impossible to trace the culprit. The hospital committed only to coordinating with the social media platform to remove the video if it reappears online. Chinese Woman Dies After Falling 250 Feet Into Ijen Volcano in Indonesia While Posing for Photo.

Ms. Gao insisted that the hospital should be able to identify the person who filmed the video, arguing that the operating theatre is a highly private setting. She noted the presence of doctors and nurses in the clip, making it unlikely for an outsider to film. The hospital then claimed the individual responsible had since left and that their contact information was deleted. China: Glass Maintenance Workers Get Trapped in the Air in Beijing After China's Capital City Hit by Strong Winds, Terrifying Video Surfaces.

Gao has decided to sue the hospital, sparking an online outcry. Critics argue that the hospital's response is a way to shirk responsibility. "If the person who did the filming has left the job, any organization could use this excuse to avoid responsibility, attributing it to individual employee actions," said one commentator. Ma Bin, a lawyer from Tianxin Law Firm in Henan, stated that posting videos online showing patients' faces without consent constitutes an infringement of privacy and image rights. The hospital remains responsible even if the video was produced by an external individual, he added.
