Beijing, November 11: The family of a woman in China is suing a Nanning clinic for 1.2 million yuan (US$168,000) after she tragically died following six cosmetic surgeries within 24 hours. The woman, identified only by her surname Liu, had travelled from her rural home in Guigang, Guangxi province, to undergo multiple cosmetic procedures at the clinic on December 9, 2020. To cover the cost, Liu reportedly took out a loan exceeding 40,000 yuan.

According to a report by myNews, On the afternoon of December 9, Liu began with double eyelid surgery and a nose job, a process that lasted five hours. She then underwent thigh liposuction, with the extracted fat subsequently transferred to her face and breasts the following morning, a procedure that also took five hours. However, on December 11, shortly after being discharged and while approaching the clinic's elevator, Liu unexpectedly collapsed. China: Man Juggles 4 Relationships in Same Housing Complex for 4 Years, Sentenced to 9 Years for Fraud and Bigamy.

Despite immediate efforts from clinic staff to resuscitate her, Liu was rushed to The Second Nanning People’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later that day. The autopsy confirmed her cause of death as “acute respiratory failure due to a pulmonary embolism following liposuction.” At the time of her passing, Liu's children were only eight and four years old. China Launches 2 Men, 1 Woman New Crew to Tiangong Space Station on Shenzhou-19 Spaceship From Jiuquan; Know Crew Details (See Pics and Video).

Liu’s family filed a lawsuit at the Jiangnan District People’s Court in Nanning City, demanding 1.18 million yuan (US$168,000) in compensation. Her husband recounted being offered 200,000 yuan by the clinic but rejected the settlement, insisting that at least one million yuan was necessary for the loss of life. He proposed a minimum of 500,000 yuan even if responsibility was shared. Despite the tragic outcome, investigations found that the clinic held the required legal documentation for the surgeries, and both doctors involved were properly licensed. The amount of fat removed during the procedures was within medical standards.

During the legal proceedings, the clinic argued that Liu was responsible for understanding the risks of surgery and denied any malpractice. Despite court requests, the clinic failed to provide treatment standards. Initially, the court held the clinic fully responsible and ordered a compensation of 1 million yuan. However, following an appeal, the court reduced the compensation to 590,000 yuan, acknowledging shared liability. The court cited errors in the clinic’s medical practices, specifically the failure to assess the risk of venous blood embolism, but also noted that Liu's health may have contributed to her death.
