Dr Jia Dehuan, Li’s physician at Zhengzhou Eighth People’s Hospital, described her condition as a “wooden” figure characterised by immobilisation, unresponsiveness, and withdrawal from reality. Dr Jia diagnosed Li with a catatonic stupor, a severe symptom of depression often triggered by intense emotional trauma or stress.
