Beijing, October 27: A young woman from Henan province in China experienced a severe psychological breakdown after being reprimanded by her supervisor. The incident led to her falling into a catatonic state. The woman is now unable to move, eat or drink. She now needs reminders to use the toilet.

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman was identified as Li. The woman's condition deteriorated to the point where she stopped eating, drinking, moving, or engaging in conversation. The incident began a month prior when Li’s team leader scolded her, causing significant emotional distress. Dr Jia Dehuan, Li’s physician at Zhengzhou Eighth People’s Hospital, described her condition as a “wooden” figure characterised by immobilisation, unresponsiveness, and withdrawal from reality. Dr Jia diagnosed Li with a catatonic stupor, a severe symptom of depression often triggered by intense emotional trauma or stress. He noted that Li’s introverted personality and difficulty in opening up to others contributed to her severe condition.

Under Dr. Jia’s care, Li received the necessary treatment and support to recover. The incident has sparked widespread concern and debate on Chinese social media, with users expressing shock and sympathy for Li’s ordeal and outrage over workplace bullying and stress. One user commented, “If your job is too demanding, it’s better to leave rather than suffer in silence.” Another remarked, “She had been torturing herself due to her boss’s actions.” China Horror: 7 Dead, 4 Injured in Gas Poisoning at Biotech Company in Shandong Province.
