British Indian Organisations in Letter to Jeremy Corbyn Slam 'Ill-Conceived' Labour Party Resolution on Kashmir
British Indian Organisations on Monday wrote to Britain's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to express disappointment over the resolution passed by the party on Kashmir. In the letter, organisations reiterated the stand of Jammu and Kashmir being the bilateral matter between Indian and Pakistan.
London, October 14: British Indian Organisations on Monday wrote to Britain's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to express disappointment over the resolution passed by the party on Kashmir. In the letter, organisations reiterated the stand that Jammu and Kashmir is bilateral matter between India and Pakistan and the resolution of the Labour Party has abandoned the long-standing cross-party position on the issue. The British Indian Organisations also said that the Labour Party’s stand on Kashmir would sow of community disharmony in the United Kingdom. In the letter, the organisations wrote, “The emergency motion passed at the recent Labour Party Conference is not acceptable to us as it seeks to interfere in the internal matters of, and between, third countries and is drafted in a one-sided and divisive manner.”

The resolution was tabled during the annual conference of the Labour Party in Brighton and was passed on September 26. The resolution condemned the Narendra Modi government’s move to scrap the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by diluting the Article 370. The resolution also called for an intervention of the third party at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). India strongly condemned the Labour Party's resolution . Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had said that India regretted uninformed and unfounded positions taken at this event. According to reports, after the resolution was passed High Commission of India in London cancelled the customary dinner reception to the Labour party, and it also withdrew invites.
Last week, the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) met Corbyn. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked the Congress over the meeting. However, the Congress clarified that the IOC’s delegation reiterated to him that his party must take up the issue of terrorism and terror groups with Pakistan and they should not interfere in India’s internal matters.
