Sydney, September 26: Aymen Terkmani, a convicted murderer serving a lengthy sentence for the brutal 2015 murder and rape of 16-year-old Mahmoud Hrouk, has died in custody at the maximum-security Lithgow Correctional Centre in New South Wales. The 31-year-old inmate was critically injured during an assault on Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries despite receiving medical attention from paramedics.

The Guardian reported that Terkmani was found guilty in 2017 of the horrific crime, where he lured Mahmoud to an abandoned home in Sydney’s Fairfield East, subjected him to a brutal attack after sexually assaulting him, and left his battered, partially clothed body to be discovered by the victim’s brother. Australia: Tamil Asylum Seeker Mano Yogalingam From Sri Lanka Sets Himself on Fire in Melbourne, Dies of Burn Injuries.

During sentencing, NSW Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum described Terkmani’s actions as “unspeakable violence,” noting the numerous and gruesome injuries inflicted on the young victim. UK Shocker: Man Dies in Freak Accident While Separating Frozen Burgers, Body Found Days Later.

Despite prosecutors advocating for a life sentence, Terkmani received a minimum sentence of 33 years and a maximum term of 45 years. His death has prompted an investigation by both prison authorities and NSW Police to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault.

The incident has raised concerns about inmate safety and the effectiveness of security measures within the correctional facility.
