Aviation Accidents in Last 24 Hours: Over 50 Killed in Kathmandu, 11 in Tehran, 5 in New York

New Delhi, Mar 12: Aviation disasters led to an unprecedented amount of casualties in the past 24 hours, with at least three major accidents being reported.

The most fatal accident was reported from Kathmandu on Monday, where over 50 people onboard a flight from Bangladesh were killed. This came hours after 5 people travelling on a chopper in New York died after the helicopter plunged into the East River. A day earlier, 11 were killed after private Turkish aircraft crashed in the mountainous region of Iran.

US-Bangla flight crashes in Nepal

With 67 passengers and 4 crew members onboard, the US-Bangla flight from Dhaka to Kathmandu crashed while landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

The plane, identified as S2-AGU, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, crashed at around 2:20 pm, metres away from the runway.

Eyewitnesses said the plane descended in an "unusual member" before hitting the ground at a high speed.

Turkish private plane crashes near Tehran

The Turkish flight took off from Sharjah International Airport on Sunday. Enroute to Istanbul, the flight crashed into a mountain near Shahr-e-Kord, located 370-km south of iranian capital Tehran.

All 11 onboard were killed, with their charred bodies being recovered. A DNA test would be conducted to confirm the identity of the victims.

Helicopter in New York falls into East River

Five people who hired a private helicopter for sunset sightseeing met a fatal accident as chopper plunged into the East River after developing a technical snag.

The accident occurred at 7pm on Sunday night, off the Roosevelt Island near the 90th Street.
