Vienna, August 27: In a horrific incident in Austria, a surgeon is alleged to have allowed his teenage daughter to drill a hole in a patient's skull during an emergency surgery. The patient, a 33-year-old man who was injured in a forestry incident was reportedly being operated upon after he suffered severe head injuries in the accident. As per local news reports, the patient was flown by air ambulance to Graz University Hospital in Styria after he got injured in a forestry incident which occurred in January.
After being flown to the hospital, the man was taken for an operation requiring emergency surgery. It is alleged that the surgeon's 13-year-old daughter was also present inside the operation room during the surgery. A local newspaper reported that the minor girl even drilled a hole in the patient's skull during the surgery. The revelations came to light in April after an anonymous complaint was filed with the public prosecutor's office in Graz. Three months after the complaint, the victim was informed about what transpired in the operation theatre in July. Although the emergency surgery was successful, the patient has been unable to get back to work after the operation. Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung also reported that the patient learned about the alleged act through the press first. Later, he was informed by the officials who said that he too was a witness in the case.
Meanwhile, after discovering the incident, the patient's lawyer, Peter Freiberger, slammed the incident and said, "You lie there. Unwilling, unconscious, and become guinea pigs. There's probably no other way to put it... that's not possible." Freiberger also said that neither the hospital contacted his client nor they apologised. While the hospital is yet to confirm the incident, it is reported that the surgeon and another specialist have been fired.
