Ukraine-Russia Tensions: UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting, US, UK Say Putin Trying To 'Re-Colonise' Countries

On February 22, the UN held an emergency Security Council meeting. During the meeting, the United States and its allies rounded on Russia. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, while addressing the council, put off Russian President Vladimir Putin's assertion that the Russian troops would take on a peacekeeping role in Donetsk and Lugansk. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine's ambassador insisted that his country's borders remain unchangeable despite the actions. Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's ambassador to the UN said Moscow is still open to diplomacy for a diplomatic solution, reported AFP. On February 21, Vladimir Putin, Russian President, recognised the independence of two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk & Lugansk.
