A colourful farewell brought an end to Tokyo Paralympics on September 5. This comes after record-shattering performances despite a year-long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Andrew Parsons, International Paralympic Committee chief declared the Games closed on a cool night in the Olympic Stadium. Parsons said they had "not just been historic, they've been fantastic.” Fans were locked out of the stadium due to Covid-19. The closing ceremony was witnessed by some 2,000 athletes and officials in attendance. The closing ceremony took "harmonious cacophony" as its theme. Yuriko Koike, Tokyo Governor handed the Paralympic flag over to Andrew Parsons, who passed it on to Anne Hidalgo, Paris Mayor, representing the 2024 hosts. Parsons then announced the end of the Games, bringing the curtain down after 539 gold medals across 22 sports. China finished on top of the table with 207 medals, including 96 golds, followed by Britain, the United States and then Russia. India’s medal count went up to 19 - five gold, eight silver and six bronze. India’s best-ever performance saw the country finish among the top 25 nations in the medal tally, at 24th. Watch the video to know more.
