Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Kashmir's Former Hurriyat Leader, Dies Aged 91
Syed Ali Shah Geelani, pro-Pakistan Kashmiri separatist, died at his home in Srinagar late on September 1. The 91-year-old hardliner Islamist leader had been ailing for long. Geelani, who has been the face of the separatist politics in Jammu & Kashmir had resigned from politics and Hurriyat last year. The Hurriyat Conference tweeted, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” The Hurriyat Conference said, “A stalwart of Kashmir's resistance movement, with his demise, an era has come to an end.” Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir & People's Democratic Party leader tweeted, “We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs.” Pakistan PM Imran Khan tweeted, “The Pakistan flag will fly at half-mast and we will observe a day of official mourning.” Security has been beefed up in the Kashmir valley.
