On April 20, a court in Surat, Gujarat dismissed Rahul Gandhi's application seeking stay on his conviction. The conviction concerns the 2019 criminal defamation case on the 'Modi surname' remarks. This comes as a huge setback for Rahul Gandhi. For now, Gandhi cannot be reinstated as a Member of Parliament. BJP’s Purnesh Modi had filed the case against Rahul Gandhi. The senior Congress leader had said, "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?"
