Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on May 20 appealed to the Uttar Pradesh government to not indulge in politics and let buses ply for migrant workers in the state. With no end to the war of words between the Congress and the UP government over the issue of providing buses for migrants, Priyanka Gandhi released a video on social media emphasising on the need to help the migrants. In a 10 minute video, Gandhi said this is not the time to play politics but to help people, especially migrant labourers, suffering due to the lockdown. Priyanka Gandhi said that the BJP is free to put their posters on the vehicles and take credit for the initiative as long as the buses are allowed to run. Gandhi recalled the buses she had arranged for migrants after the Congress waited till 4 pm on May 20 for UP to allow them in. She had informed UP CM Yogi Adityanath about the 1,000-odd buses made available by the Congress. On the other hand, the BJP claims that Congress is trying to gain political mileage out of the exercise. In a twist to the political drama, a Congress MLA attacked her own party. Aditi Singh, Congress MLA, Rae Bareli said, ‘In the hour of crisis, why this petty politics? A list of 1,000 buses was sent, but more than half the buses were fake, 297 were defective, 98 were auto-rickshaws and ambulance-type cars and 68 vehicles were without registration papers.’ Thousands of migrants stranded by the coronavirus lockdown, left jobless across cities are desperate to go home.
