Members of IPAC(Indian Political Action Committee) who are in Agartala, Tripura have alleged that they are being forcefully confined to their hotel room and not being allowed to move out by the state police. An IPAC team is reportedly in Tripura to conduct a survey for Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress Party.
Videos from the location show policemen at the door of the rooms of the hotel where the IPAC members are based. The police claim that they are conducting an investigation as to the purpose of the team’s visit as well as if the members have the required COVID-19 pandemic permit to move about the state. Reports say the Tripura Police has not given any official reason for the detention, only claiming the IPAC team had violated Covid-19 norms.
Election in the BJP-ruled state is due in 2023. Trinamool Congress’s state unit chief Ashish Lal Singha called the detention an "attack on democracy" as per PTI. Watch the video to know more.
