Paytm Calls Out Google For Arm Twisting, Says It Has Different Rules For Itself; Google Says Gambling & Betting Violate Its Play Store Policies Not Cashbacks & Vouchers

Google issued a statement following a blog post by payments platform Paytm. In the statement, Google said that cashbacks and stickers do not violate its policies, but gambling platforms do. The company took down Paytm from its platform on September 18 because it was using its payments app to promote Paytm First Games, which has a daily fantasy sports aspect to it, hence violating Google’s policies. The Indian fintech unicorn in a blog post said that the Paytm Cricket League campaign didn’t violate the Play Store policies. The company also insinuated that Google isn’t applying the same policies to its own Google Pay app, which is currently running a Tez Shots campaign around the Indian Premier League (IPL) too. Paytm removed the cashback components from the campaign late on September 18 and was reinstated on the Play Store.
