Muharram 2020: All You Need to Know About Islamic New Year

Muharram marks the beginning of Islamic New Year, and it is the first of the 12 months as per the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar or the Hijri calendar is based on the sighting of the crescent. The Muharram 2020 is expected to begin in India from Thursday, August 20 or 21, depending on the crescent. During Muharram, especially for the first ten days, Shia and Sunni Muslims spend a period of mourning to recall the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (Alaihi Salaam).
