Japan: Eight Killed, Several Injured After Powerful Earthquake Of 7.6 Magnitude Jolts Country; Buildings Collapsed, Tsunami Warning Issued

At least eight people have been killed in Japan after a massive earthquake of 7.6 magnitude hit the country on January 1, reported NHK World. The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at 4:10 pm local time on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa prefecture. As per the Japan Meteorological Office, since January 1, Japan has been hit by 155 earthquakes including a 7.6-magnitude jolt and one more over 6. Several buildings collapsed, fires broke out and even tsunami warnings were issued till eastern Russia. People in Japan's coastal areas were instructed to evacuate as soon as possible. The Japan PM’s office said, “Spare no effort in our emergency disaster responses, including saving lives and rescuing disaster victims, with the Government working as one.” The Indian Embassy in Japan has set up an emergency room for anyone to contact.
