Jagdeep, The Soorma Bhopali Of Bollywood Dies At 81; Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn & Others Pay Tributes
On July 8, the film industry lost one more gem, Jagdeep, the Soorma Bhopali of Bollywood. The 81-year-old actor breathed his last at his Mumbai residence. Jagdeep is survived by his wife, daughters and sons, among them actors Jaaved Jaaferi and TV personality Naved Jafri. Born as Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, the legendary actor was popularly known as Jagdeep, his stage name. Among cinephiles, Jagdeep was best identified as Soorma Bhopali from Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra's 1975 film Sholay. He was also famous for his roles as Machchar from 1984 film Purana Mandir and as Bankelal Bhopali (Salman Khan's father) in Salman and Aamir Khan's 1994 film Andaz Apna Apna. In 1988, Jagdeep also directed the film Soorma Bhopali based on his character from Sholay. Ajay Devgn & Anil Kapoor were one of the first celebs to mourn the legendary actor. As the news spread, many Bollywood celebs including Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana, Manoj Bajpayee, Randeep Hooda, Johny Lever, Anubhav Sinha & others offered their condolences on social media & remembered the late actor. The late actor once made former PM Jawaharlal Nehru happy by his stellar performance in Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke. Nehru had gifted him his personal staff as a token of appreciation.
