‘I Wept Tears Of Relief’, Says Bilkis Bano After Landmark Supreme Court Order; 11 Convicts To Go Back To Jail

11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case will have to go back to jail. On January 8, the Supreme Court quashed the Gujarat government’s decision to release the convicts involved in the gang-rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The convicts were released for "good behaviour". Bilkis Bano has said the day is "truly the New Year" for her. She added, “I have wept tears of relief. I smiled for the first time in over a year and half. I have hugged my children. It feels like a stone the size of a mountain has been lifted from my chest, and I can breathe again.” All the 11 convicts have to surrender within two weeks. The 11 convicts were released on August 15, 2022 by the Gujarat government.
