Haiti Hit By 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake, Over 1200 People Dead, 5,700 Injured

Haitian government declared a state of emergency after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the country on August 14. As per the country's civil protection agency, at least 1,297 people died in the tragic incident, reported CNN. More than 5,700 people have been left injured. The earthquake destroyed 13,694 homes and damaged another 13,785, reported CNN. Reportedly, this earthquake was far less damaging than the one in 2010. Videos shared on social media offer a glimpse of the widespread damage after the earthquake. Video clips also showed residents pulling stunned survivors out of the rubble of collapsed buildings. US President Joe Biden said in a statement that he was "saddened by the devastating earthquake that occurred in Saint-Louis du Sud, Haiti.” Tennis star Naomi Osaka, the No. 2 player in the world tweeted, “I’m about to play a tournament this week and I’ll give all the prize money to relief efforts for Haiti.”
