Father Stan Swamy, Accused In Bhima Koregaon Case, Dies In Incarceration, UN, EU Human Rights Body Condemn His Death

Death of Father Stan Swamy, the 84-year-old Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist has triggered a sea of messages on social media from political leaders, intellectuals and other activists. He was arrested and jailed last year under draconian anti-terror law UAPA in connection with the Elgar Parishad case. Among those to have spoken out are Mary Lawlor, a United Nations Special Rapporteur for human rights defenders & Eamon Gilmore, the European Union's Special Representative for Human Rights . In January, the United Nation's Human Rights office in Switzerland expressed serious concern over the condition of  Father Stan Swamy and other human rights activists in India. Within the country, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi & Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren posted messages of tribute & condolences. Trinamool Congress Leader Mahua Moitra tweeted, “84-year old Stan Swamy dies waiting for bail.
