Dholavira in Gujarat has been given the tag of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is the first site recognised as an Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) settlement which has been allocated the tag in India. Dholavira is the fourth site in Gujarat from India’s 40 to be recognised by UNESCO.
Dholavira’s discovery in the modern age came in 1968 by Indian archaeologist Jagat Pati Joshi. But the excavation of site was only undertaken in 1990 & 2005 under the supervision of archaeologist Ravindra Singh Bisht.
In its release, UNESCO termed Dholavira as one of the most remarkable and well-preserved urban settlements in South Asia dating from the 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE (Before Common Era). Since the excavation at the site, the ASI has developed a museum here. Watch the video to know more.
