Congress on  July 28 hit out at the Centre over Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana's appointment as the Delhi Police Commissioner. The party said it was in "direct contravention" of a Supreme Court judgment. Congress asked whether any "quid pro quo" was involved.

Rakesh Asthana, a senior IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, was appointed the Commissioner of Delhi Police on July 27. He then took charge as the Commissioner of Delhi Police.

Attacking the government over the appointment, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that with four days left for Asthana's superannuation, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification naming Asthana as the Police Commissioner of Delhi. He said effectively the Ministry granted him a one-year extension from the date of his superannuation "as a special case in public interest". Khera underlined that Asthana is four days away from his retirement, is not an AGMUT cadre officer and his experiences include working with the CBI. What is the government suggesting, that it wants to convert Delhi into a "CBI state", he asked.
