Cold Wave Conditions In North, Central India: Ground Frost & Snowfall Warnings Issued During Christmas Week
Northern half of the country is set to experience a chilly year-end festive period. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as of December 23 a feeble western disturbance, a low-pressure system that originates over the Mediterranean Sea & brings high-altitude westerly wind systems towards India, is located over north Afghanistan & neighbourhood. As 2020 comes to a close, these moist winds are expected to cause isolated snowfall across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from December 24. IMD had forecast cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at isolated pockets across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on December 23 & 24. The regional met centre in New Delhi has issued orange alerts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for the next two days, with this advisory warning the residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions. A yellow watch has been placed over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, so as to urge people to ‘be aware’ of their local weather situation.
