California: Dixie Fire Becomes Second Largest Wildfire In US State's History

A wildfire in northern California expanded to nearly 500,000 acres on August 8 and left firefighters injured. It is now the second largest recorded in the US state’s history. The Dixie Fire, burning in the northeast of San Francisco, had grown to 489,287 acres from about 274,000 acres in the middle of last week, California’s fire protection department tweeted. The fire has been active for 26 days now. At least 404 structures have been destroyed by the fire so far, while more than 13,800 others are under threat, reported Aljazeera. The report also said that only the August Complex Fire, which consumed more than 404,700 hectares (1 million acres) in California in August of last year, was bigger. Heat waves & drought tied to climate change have made wildfires harder to fight in the United States. California has always seen serious blazes burning thousands of land areas and forests.
