Army Day is celebrated on January 15 in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's (then a Lieutenant General) taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India on the same date in 1949. Every year, parades and other military shows are held in the national capital New Delhi and in all the headquarters. People share Army Day messages, wishes and images to each other in a bid to pay tribute to the Jawans of the Indian Army.
