Afghanistan: US Ends Mission As Last C-17 Airplane Leaves Kabul, Taliban Fire Celebratory Gunshots Across City
US military has completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan. With this, comes to end, a brutal 20-year war, which has been America's longest. It started and ended with the hardline Taliban in power, this happened despite billions of dollars spent trying to rebuild the country. Celebratory gunfire rang out in Kabul in the early hours of August 31. Elated senior Taliban officials hailed the event as a watershed moment. The finals days saw evacuation of tens of thousands of people & scores of Afghans and 13 US troops dead in a suicide attack last week. The withdrawal came before the end of August 31, the actual deadline set by President Joe Biden. The White House tweeted, “From 3 AM ET on 8/29 to 3AM ET on 8/30, a total of approximately 1,200 people were evacuated from Kabul.” Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister said, “It’s the culmination of a mission unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes.” Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman said Afghanistan had "gained full independence" with the US withdrawal.
