OpenAI's newly announced SearchGPT Prototype showed a first look at the upcoming search capabilities in the ChatGPT AI chatbot. According to several reports, the upcoming SearchGPT would take on Google search engine and offer real-time, faster and timely search results.
San Francisco, July 28: ChatGPT developer OpenAI has been making strides in the world of artificial intelligence, pioneering and offering solutions for the next generation. On July 25, 2024, OpenAI introduced its new SearchGPT Prototype, offering a first look at the temporary prototype of the upcoming capabilities to search and find relevant information on the platform. There was already speculation about the SearchGPT months before its official reveal.
With this move, OpenAI is expected to give competition to Google search engine dominance for almost two decades since its first release in 1998. OpenAI shared a post about the first look at its new SearchGPT Prototype and some of its capabilities. The Sam Altman-run company said that the new search features would combine the strength of its AI models and information from the web to get users "fast and timely" answers quoting relevant sources. The AI company said that it would launch the prototype to a small group to get feedback, and in the future, SearchGPT will be integrated into ChatGPT. According to reports, the latest announcement is seen as the move to take on Google and bring a technological shift in how people search and find information on the web. OpenAI shared a video of the search capabilities of the SearchGPT Prototype. When I typed "music festival in Boone in North Carolina in August", I showed a list of events, including their brief description with the source name and link.
Further, the prototype answered if the Jones House was "family-friendly". OpenAI said in its blog post, "Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results." The company said it was just an initial prototype that will be improved. According to a report by Business Insider, OpenAI's SearchGPT was introduced to put the company against Google's SGE (Search Generative Experience) and search feature offered by startup company Perplexity AI. Although Google's SGE feature was not available to the public, once it is rolled out, it will offer an AI-generated summary to the users. To tackle this, Microsoft would reportedly use the SearchGPT feature in its Bing browser to provide faster results. Google reportedly has 90% of the search market, while Microsoft Bing has a 5.5% market, as per DOJ (Department of Justice). With the OpenAI SearchGPT, Microsoft-backed companies could take on the dominant role in Google search.
