The messaging mammoth, last year stopped developing updates for devices which had BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry10, Windows Phone 8.0 and older platforms. Facebook-owned WhatsApp later insisted its users to upgrade their devices to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+. As of now, people having older phones won’t be able to access WhatsApp’s new features and also not be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts.
WhatsApp last year mentioned in their blog, that the expiry date for the devices running Windows Phone 8.0, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 and older platforms will be December 31, 2017. While phones running Android 2.3.7 or older will stop working from February 1, 2020 and Nokia S40 devices by December 31, 2018.
As per the report, the company’s spokesperson replied to the action, “These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.” The company further added, “As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use.”
