With the rising concern of fake messages in the country, the Indian government sent out a second notice to WhatsApp and asked the platform to take necessary steps for fighting the problem. According to the report from The Economic Times, the Facebook-owned messaging service is aiming to curb fake news on its platform.
Taking a step forward in that direction, WhatsApp senior executives from US headquarters and India operations met the Election Commission for its effort to fight against the misuse of its platform during the upcoming elections in 2019, reports the publication.
Moreover, the platform will also look out for spam messaging techniques for the upcoming polls, particularly 48 hours before polling. It will also bring a fake news verification tool to India, which was also employed in Mexico general elections. Talking more about the verification model, the Facebook-owned messaging app aims to bring the Verificado model to India, which is a collective fact-checking exercise that was used during recent Mexican elections.
WhatsApp is also looking to undertake a similar exercise in Brazil, where 24 media outlets have come together to fact check viral content and rumours.

The election commission officials and WhatsApp executives said learning from monitoring efforts during end-2018 state elections would be used to frame a broader approach for general elections scheduled for 2019.
