Uber, a popular transportation network company on Monday officially launched a new mobile application called Uber Lite. The new app is designed for markets such as India where data connectivity is poor. The new app has much more refined software offering more space for users with limited data plans, weak connectivity and slower than average internet speeds. Uber Lite is less than 5MB download size, as compared to the regular Uber app which is around 181.4MB size. The new ride booking app is currently compatible with Android phones which is where Uber’s target audience is located.

The main difference between the two apps is the map, in Uber Lite app maps will be optional to keep the application running fast and smooth. Uber Lite uses the rider’s GPS location to guess possible destinations, keeping detail minimal and simple. The app caches the city’s top places so that even when users are offline, no network is needed for them to surface.
