New Delhi, October 11: TikTok reportedly laid off hundreds of employees. As per reports, the company shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) in content moderation. The layoffs are said to be a part of a restructuring the company and improving its efficiency in managing content on the platform.
As per a report of Reuters, TikTok is laying off hundreds of its employees across its global workforce. It includes a significant number of employees in Malaysia. It comes as the company shifts its focus towards using AI to manage content on the platform. According to reports, around 700 employees have been laid off in Malaysia. However, ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, has clarified that fewer than 500 employees in the country were actually affected by these layoffs. The decision towards AI in content moderation can be seen as a part of TikTok’s strategy to improve the way it monitors and manages posts on its platform. As per reports, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has more than 1,10,000 employees working in over 200 cities around the world, as stated on its official website.
TikTok uses a combination of automated tools and human moderators to check and manage the content uploaded on its platform. TikTok has reportedly confirmed that it is laying off several hundred employees globally. These job cuts are implemented to make its content moderation process more efficient by improving how posts are reviewed and handled across the platform. Most of the employees affected by the recent layoffs at TikTok were working in content moderation. These employees were reportedly informed about losing their jobs through email. Despite the job cuts, TikTok plans to invest USD 2 billion this year in efforts to improve trust and safety on the platform. The company is focusing on making its operations more efficient with content moderation by using AI technology.
