Tiger at SGNP Undergoes Lip Surgery For Tumour, Now Recovering
Dr Shailesh Pethe, a veterinarian at SGNP, said the biopsy had shown the growth was benign. The operation took place on August 13.
Mumbai, August 23: Nine-year-old Tiger named Yash in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali was operated for a tumour on his lip. A benign tumour had to be removed and for the first time, a gaseous anaesthesia was used on a wild animal at the SGNP. A tumour was discovered about a month ago and it had to be operated upon quickly. The tiger is doing well and recovering.
Dr Shailesh Pethe, a veterinarian at SGNP, said the biopsy had shown the growth was benign. The operation took place on August 13. Dr. Pethe said, "The tumour was 2.5 inches long, 2 inches in width and weighed between 120 and 150 gm," as informed by Dr Pethe to TOI. "Medical reports show no recurrence is likely," said another veterinary professor. Duck Survives a Tiger Attack! This Viral Video Teaches Us How to Duck Problems Skilfully.
The administration of gaseous anaesthesia was unique to this operation process. It is said to be a much safer process and it also reduces the complications in operation as said by Dr Wakankar. Although it is common for human operations, it was a first for any wild animal at the national park. "The national park now has seven tigers, three of them males," said range forest officer Sanjay Waghmode.
