Recently, a new ‘supervolcano’ rising towards the surface in New England was making the headlines triggering tension among citizens. Some unexpected activities were going on about 100 miles below the ground of New England, United States of America. A place where geologist believe to not really have any rumbling volcanoes was in the news after scientists discovered a huge mass of molten rocks that were supposedly creeping upwards beneath the surface. ‘Supervolcano’ appeared in some media outlets! But it turns out that there isn’t such thing brewed under New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. So, keep your calm and here the details of the study.

The research that was published last year in a scientific journal last year by Geophysicist Vadim Levin, Rutgers University. It explains a Yellowstone-esque caldera—a large crater left by volcanic explosion, that should not be expected anytime soon or even in the future. After the news of supervolcano were doing rounds, Levin in an interview said, “We never advocated it could lead to volcanism. The mass of warmer rock is not even near to become a volcano.

In a press release, Levin is quoted as saying that it will take a “million of years” for this hot rock to “get where it’s going”. And this does not mean the rocks will lead to a supervolcano or any volcano at all. Stanley Mertzman, a volcanologist at Franklin and Marshall College who was not part of the study, said via email, “The one thing you can be absolutely sure of — nothing is going to happen on the surface of New England involving volcanic activity in your lifetime or that of countless generations to come given its current geological situation,”

Lenin and his team used the advanced technology called Earthscope through which one can study seismic activities throughout the county to understand what is happening beneath the ground. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) defines Supervolcanos as those that have at some point erupted more than 1,000 cubic kilometres of fresh volcaniclastic material in a sudden and violent way leaving a huge crater known as caldera. And the hot rock under New England is certainly no supervolcano.
