A new depression had formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal which intensified into a deep depression today and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm. In the wake of the brewing cyclonic storm, the IMD has issued a cyclone alert for Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The weather agency has issued a yellow alert for cyclones at both locations. Due to the cyclonic storm conditions, the fishermen are advised not to venture into east-central and adjoining the northeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on September 25 and into northwest & adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha, West Bengal & North Andhra Pradesh coasts till September 27.
According to the latest IMD forecast, the depression over the Bay of Bengal moved westwards and intensified into a Deep Depression. On September 25, the system was about 510 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 590 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The IMD said that Gulab is likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm during the next 12 hours and is predicted to move westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh - south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam & Gopalpur around Kalingapatnam by the evening of September 26, 2021. In April 2020, the new list of tropical cyclone names has been adopted by WMO/ESCAP Panel Member Countries. This list of cyclone names is used for naming tropical cyclones that occur over the North Indian Ocean including the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
