Mumbai, July 23: Scientists in Brazil confirm that there is a presence of high levels of cocaine in the muscles and livers of the sharks near Rio de Janeiro. Researchers have found traces of cocaine in sharks off Brazil's coast, raising concerns that the drug could be influencing their behaviour. According to a few theories, it's believed the cocaine likely entered the sharks' habitat through runoff from illegal drug labs or untreated sewage containing the waste of drug users. Let's know more about the "Cocaine Sharks."
Several marine biologists often debate how these sharks are fed with cocaine. Tests revealed that every shark sample tested positive for cocaine. Additionally, 92 per cent of muscle samples and 23 per cent of liver samples contained benzoylecgonine, a primary cocaine metabolite. This is the first evidence of cocaine in free-ranging sharks. All About 'Cocaine Sharks'
A "cocaine shark" refers to sharks that have been found with traces of cocaine in their systems. This term is widely used to highlight how cocaine contamination is affecting marine life. The source of cocaine in these marine animals is still debated, but a few theories suggest that cocaine typically enters aquatic environments through runoff from illegal drug labs or untreated sewage. When drug users dispose of substances improperly or when waste from drug manufacturing facilities leaks into waterways, it can contaminate marine life. Sharks and other marine animals that come into contact with contaminated water may absorb the drug through their gills and skin. Studies suggest that exposure to cocaine might lead to increased aggression or changes in swimming patterns among sharks. These behavioural alterations can disrupt their natural habits and ecological roles.
