Sriharihota, July 11: GSLVMkIII carrying Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft is currently undergoing launch checks at the launch pad of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The estimated cost of Chandrayaan-2 is Rs  603 crore, while its launcher GSLV MK-III costs Rs 375 crore. According to the ISRO, Orbiter, with scientific payloads, would orbit around the moon. Lander would soft-land on the moon at a predetermined site and deploy Rover. The primary aim of the mission is to perform mineralogical and elemental studies of the lunar surface.

Doordarshan (DD) will live telecast the Chandrayaan 2 launch. Chandrayaan-1 is the first Indian lunar mission. The ISRO on October 22, 2008, launched the Chandrayaan-1 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, at Sriharikota. The estimated cost for that project was Rs 386 crore. India became the fourth nation -- after the United States, China and Russia -- to successfully perform a "soft landing" of an unmanned mission on the moon with the launch of Chandrayaan-1.
