Chandrayaan 2 Gets Closer to Moon by Completing Third Lunar Bound Orbit Maneuver, to Land on Moon in Next 11 Days

New Delhi, August 28: Chandrayaan 2, India's second lunar mission, got closer to the Moon after completing its third lunar-bound orbit maneuver on Wednesday. The spacecraft is just 11 days away from landing on the moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said. The third lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft was performed successfully on August 28 at 9.04 am using the onboard propulsion system. According to details available on the official ISRO website, the duration of the third maneuver was 1190 seconds. The orbit achieved is 179 km x 1412 km. The space agency said all spacecraft parameters were normal, the city-headquartered space agency said after the maneuver on the spacecraft that is currently in the lunar orbit for its rendezvous with the Moon. ISRO informed that the next Lunar bound orbit maneuver is scheduled on August 30, 2019 between 1800 - 1900 hrs IST. The spacecraft had successfully entered the lunar orbit on August 20 by performing Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver. The space agency has also released two sets of pictures of moon captured by the spacecraft. Chandrayaan 2 is just two steps away from entering the final orbit as there will be two more orbit manoeuvres passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the Moon’s surface.
