New Delhi, September 10: Samsung Electronics is facing a major disruption at its India plant as workers continue a strike demanding higher wages. The strike, which has entered its second day, which is affecting production output at one of Samsung's key facilities in Tamil Nadu, India. Workers are reportedly calling for a wage hike and better working conditions. The Samsung Electronics manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur is located around 40 kilometres away from Chennai.
As per a report of Reuters, the second day of the strike at Samsung's India plant has resulted in a notable disruption of output. Union leader E. Muthukumar reportedly confirmed that the strike is still ongoing, with the workers demanding not only higher wages but also improved working conditions, as per a report of CNBC TV18. The employees have also requested for formal recognition of their union. The protest was identified by posters reportedly displaying "Indefinite Strike." The factory, which has approximately 1,800 people workers, saw a big drop in production. On Monday, many workers did not come to work, which resulted in about 50 percent decrease in output. According to multiple reports, Muthukumar stated that there should be an increase in the average wages from INR 25,000 to INR 36,000. The spokesperson of Samsung India reportedly stated that the company is committed to addressing any concerns or complaints that the workers may have and further highlighted that Samsung will follow all the laws and regulations. Samsung has two factories in India: one in Noida and another in Sriperumbudur. According to media reports, the Sriperumbudur plant accounts for approximately 20-30 per cent of Samsung's annual revenue of USD1 2 billion in the country.
