OpenAI Plans To Restrict API Access in China Starting in July, Says Report

ChatGPT maker OpenAI reportedly plans to restrict access to its AI technology in China and other countries starting in July, prompting Chinese AI firms like Baidu, Alibaba Cloud and Zhipu AI to offer migration programs to their own platforms and AI models.

New Delhi, June 26: ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly planning to restrict access to its AI technology in certain countries, including China, starting in July. OpenAI’s restrictions to its application programming interface (API) might have a significant impact on the Chinese AI industry. The platform basically allows developers of other products to integrate its AI models.

As per a report of Reuters, ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, is not available in mainland China. However, many Chinese startups reportedly have found a way around this by accessing OpenAI's API platform. It has allowed them to build their own applications by getting access of OpenAI's API platform. OpenAI Announces ChatGPT Now Available for All Apple Mac Users.

As many Chinese startups reportedly been using OpenAI's API to create their own AI-powered solutions and the upcoming restrictions might force them to seek alternative options. In response to OpenAI's plans, Chinese AI firms reportedly have quickly stepped up to support affected users. Baidu, Alibaba Cloud and Zhipu AI have reportedly announced programs to help users migrate to their AI platforms and models.

As per reports, Baidu, China's leading AI developer, has announced an "inclusive program" that will provide free migration to its Ernie platform and additional tokens for its flagship model to match the usage scale of OpenAI. Alibaba Cloud has also extended support to OpenAI API users by offering free tokens and migration services through its AI platform, with its Qwen-plus model priced lower than GPT-4. The AI industry in China has been very competitive recently. Many Chinese companies have been creating their own chatbots and AI systems for the past few years.
