New Delhi, September 24: OpenAI News account on X reportedly fell victim to a cyber attack on Monday, September 23. As per reports, the OpenAI Newsroom X account, known for sharing updates about the leading AI research organisation, was compromised. The account was used to post misleading messages about a fraudulent crypto token. The incident follows a recent pattern of cyber attacks targeting OpenAI-related accounts. The unauthorised posts were visible for about an hour and were removed eventually. OpenAI is reportedly aware of the breach and is investigating the issue.
As per a report of Tech Crunch, crypto scammers hacked OpenAI’s press account on X, leading to the dissemination of crypto posts. The OpenAI news account on X (@OpenAINewsroom) was compromised with fake crypto posts, according to a report of The Business Times. OpenAI's press account on X (@OpenAINewsroom) was compromised by unknown crypto scammers. The post reportedly said, "All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI's initial supply. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs." The posted messages encouraged users to click on a link related to a fake crypto token. The hacker posted a message about a token named “$OPENAI.”
It is not the first time that a fake cryptocurrency post has come from an account associated with OpenAI. As per reports, Researcher, Jason Wei's account recently shared a message that falsely claimed to introduce a new token called “$OPENAI.” Additionally, back in June, the account of Jakub Pachocki, who is the chief scientist at OpenAI, was hacked. In June 2023, the account of Mira Murati, the chief technology officer, was also briefly compromised. These incidents have raised concerns about the security of high-profile social media accounts, those linked to influential companies like OpenAI. Before this incident, a member of OpenAI's security team shared a memo with employees. The memo reportedly warned about an increase in account hacks targeting OpenAI staff and shared tips on how to protect their accounts.
