People whose lives revolve around the internet could face major inconvenience all over the globe as the internet facility could crash in the coming 48 hours. The main domain servers and infrastructure related to the web will be shut down for some maintenance purposes. The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), is an organisation which looks after the domain names and IP addresses. There will be a change in the cryptographic key which helps in maintaining the security of Domain Name System (DNS). So all your WhatsApp, Facebook and other social networking might have to stop. Netflix Streaming Consuming 15 Percent of Worldwide Internet Bandwidth, Says Study.

A DNS is like an address book of the internet services so it is of utmost importance to maintain the security of it. According to the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), "To further clarify, some internet users might be affected if their network operators or Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have not prepared for this change. However, this impact can be avoided by enabling the appropriate system security extensions." Inclusive Internet Report: India Ranks 47th Among 86 Countries Surveyed.

According to the hierarchy of the internet systems, there are several other servers in 130 locations around the world, so it is rare that people will see a major internet drop. There are other servers that will fill the gap, if one is temporarily shut. But the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from country to country should be able to handle the traffic juggling at such times. The ICANN has conducted some tests which showed that there will be minimal problems.

So there could be issues with the speed of the internet and accessibility issues to some networks. But it is a very important procedure to change the cryptographic keys due to the rising threats of security to the internet infrastructure. But this is also the first time such maintenance is being carried out on a global scale.
