Net Neutrality Coming Back: FCC Under Leadership of Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel To Reinstate Neutrality Rules in US After Repealing in 2017, Says Report
Net neutrality, a concept that promises to keep internet fair and open for everyone will reportedly be coming back to US. The FCC led by Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel would majorly vote in favor of it. However, some people are against the law; check details here.
Washington, April 25: Net Neutrality, a concept that was first introduced in 2000s has been a topic of discussion for years. Former FCC Chairman Ajit Pai along with the majority of the FCC members, voted to repeal net neutrality in the US in 2017, stating that the role of the Federal Communications Commission was not to decide net neutrality but to ensure a 'free and open' internet.
According to a report by The Verge, net neutrality would make a comeback soon. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are set to vote to restore the rules after repealing them in 2018 under the Trump administration. The report mentioned that the FCC expected to reclassify ISPs (Internet Service Providers). The majority of the votes are expected to favour net neutrality because FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel is a Democrat. The report said that net neutrality would help ensure users' fair access to the open internet by upholding "no blocking" or "throttling" principles. However, opponents of this concept, including industry players, have been fearful that net neutrality would halt innovation and allow ISPs to introduce difficult price regulations.
In 2015, the FCC reportedly imposed net neutrality rules after a long-running fight and a loud campaign in its support. However, it was repealed by the former FCC chairman Ajit Pai under the Trump administration starting in 2017. On the other hand, US President Joe Biden reportedly shared his intentions to bring it back. However, the report mentioned that net neutrality would no longer be a big tech policy issue. It also noted that the vote came after Joe Biden signed a law forcing TikTok from its Chinese parent company ByteDance to face a complete ban in the country. The report mentioned that the new net neutrality rules are not different from those in 2015; however, the FCC said to focus on rules that give insights into internet outages and provide authority over national security issues. Still, the opponents of net neutrality fear that the agency would reclassify IPSs as common carriers, leading to the FCC controlling the pricing and disincentivizing innovation. FCC said it would forbear the rate regulation authority as part of the proposal. On the other hand, supporters say that net neutrality in some states, such as California, controls the worst behaviours.
