MoneyGram Data Breach: Hackers Attack Global Fintech Giant and Steal Critical Consumer Information, Investigation Launched
Hackers attacked US-based finance service provider MoneyGram and stole critical information of its consumers. The company began investigation after the MoneyGram data breach.
Dallas, October 8: Global fintech giant MoneyGram International Inc. has confirmed that hackers attacked its database and accessed the customers' valuable personal information and transaction data in September 2024. The cyberattack of the last month compromised the critical data of the people using the money transfer and other digital services offered by the company.
MoneyGram informed about the cyberattack through a post on its website titled "Notice of Data Breach". The money transfer giant addressed all its customers and informed that on September 27, 2024, MoneyGram found that an unauthorised third party accessed and acquired personal information of some of its customers. The MoneyGram data breach occurred between September 20 to 22, 2024. MoneyGram said it started investigating the data breach and informed that the hackers gained access to the information like consumer names, contact information such as phone numbers, email address and postal address, data of birth and a limited individuals' of social security numbers. Beyond this, the cyberattacks were able to access government-issued identification documents like driver's license, utility bills, bank account numbers, MoneyGram Plus reward numbers, transaction information (including dates and transaction amounts). The MoneyGram data breach compromised details like criminal investigation information like fraud. MoneyGram said that upon detecting the issue, it took the right steps to contain and remediate the data breach. The global fintech company said it took certain systems offline even if it affected its services temporarily. MoneyGram launched investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts and began coordinating with law enforcement. The company said, "Our systems are back online and we have resumed normal business operations."
